January 31, 2012 | Mayhem in the garden: stump grinding

The temperature has dropped and the rain has bucketed down.  The ground out there is very soggy.  Winter conditions have at last come to the east of England.

And timed arrival to perfection to coincide with the one tonne machine that has come up from Mersea Island by trailer to grind our roots.  Paul and I [...]

January 10, 2012 | The garden skeleton is revealed to bitter tears

Take a look at this and this:

Dem bones.  I stayed up way too late last night and surfed with saddo zeal amongst the gardening blogs.  Take back saddo.   Read, laughed,  imbibed, learnt and went a little boss eyed.  Got just a little hooked.  Quite a few gardeners are posting fabulous images of their garden [...]

October 2, 2011 | Well Hello Window Boxes

Hmmmmmmmmm, those tidy little planted patches  outside slick offices.  An urban phenomenon.  Downtown there are guys who are primping the spotted laurel nestling with showy cyclamens.  It all looks so cool.  My remit is to go a little outside the oh-so-smart financial areas and see how the free-style window box is making a  mark.

Well, Pimlico [...]

August 6, 2010 | All going horribly wrong in the vegetable patch

For starters, a rat or mouse has been chomping on my oh so wierd squash zuccheta Serpente di Sicilia.  It in turn is strangling the nearby runner beans. Trailing  amain, it thirstily treats every watering can’s worth as an excuse to put on another 40 cms in  tentacle growth.  Over all,  sunflowers like blocks of [...]

July 25, 2010 | In praise of Blotanical.com with animal chorus

on the pigs back

on the pigs back

As a self-confessed techno-phobe and luddite, I feel I am on the pig’s back with lovely www.blotanical.com. It’s the website for people blogging about gardens all over the world.

Can’t quite think why this new hobby of blogging came upon me.  Computers? URLS? RSS feeds?  All a dense fuzz in the brain’s [...]

June 27, 2010 | Elephants and green walls

These elephants are made of fibre-glass, have been painted by artists and are to be auctioned by a charity, Elephant Family, that is out to save the Asian elephant.  Asian elephants are  much better behaved than African ones. (who undoubtedly need saving too as they have fallen foul of the poacher for their tusks and [...]
